The Piggy Bank Has Been
Grey Since The Beginning.
We Only Just Noticed.

It was never pink. The optimism was always painted on. Somewhere between childhood and the first rent payment, the colour left — and the object beneath it had always been this shade.
By Our Economics Correspondent • D.O.M.O Investigations

The piggy bank sits on the desk of approximately forty percent of Indian households that keep one. It is rarely opened. The coin slot is used, dutifully, from the moment a child is old enough to understand that money goes in and does not come out until it needs to. The moment it needs to always arrives before the moment it should.

DOMO has examined the Grey Piggy Bank (D.O.M.O-033, ₹206) for some months now. Our finding is this: the grey is not a design choice. It is an honest one. The bright ceramic piggy banks sold at every gift shop in every city in this country are lying to the child who receives them. They suggest that saving is cheerful, that accumulation is colourful, that the future waiting inside is pink and round and full of promise.

The grey one tells the truth. The grey says: this is hard work. This is discipline without guarantee. This is putting something away in the hope that the world will not find a way to take it before you need it — which, historically, it frequently does.

"Every coin that went in had a story about why it shouldn't have to."

— D.O.M.O-033, The Grey Piggy Bank

The coin slot is the narrowest part. This is intentional — in the object and in the metaphor. Getting money in is always easier than getting it back. The slot welcomes. The belly holds. The stopper at the base requires a decision, a removal, a commitment to spend what was saved. That decision, our sources report, is almost always deferred.

What remains inside the piggy bank is not savings. It is evidence of restraint. It is a record of all the things that were not bought, all the coffees skipped, all the small luxuries declined in the hope that the total would eventually mean something. Whether it does depends on variables the piggy bank cannot control and was never designed to predict.

The Paper Boat Was Not
Built To Last. It Was Built
To Mean Something.

Arts & Objects Correspondent

The paper boat (D.O.M.O-034, ₹343) is available in six colours. Faded Blue. Bureaucratic Red. White of Surrender. Dark Green. Glow in the Dark. Glow Yellow. Each name is a decision. Naming a colour "White of Surrender" is not decoration. It is a position.

The paper boat is made of a material that dissolves in the water it is built to sail on. This is either a tragedy or a philosophy, depending on what you were expecting from a paper boat. DOMO's position is that it is a philosophy. That everything made with pure intention is consumed by the thing it was made to meet.

"Fold it with intention. Launch it with no expectation of return."

— D.O.M.O-034, Instructions (There Are None)

DOMO recommends purchasing the Faded Blue version for its honesty. It has already faded. It does not pretend to be bright. It is the colour of something that tried and was changed by the trying.

Silence After The Scream. Year Seven. Still Silent.

The DOMO archive confirms that Silence After The Scream (D.O.M.O-035, ₹666) has not changed since its production. The silence is the same silence. The scream is recorded only by the fact of the silence following it. Nothing in the object confirms the scream happened. Everything about it does.

Letters to the Editor

"I've been putting coins in the same grey piggy bank since 2019. I opened it last month. There was enough for three months of rent. I put it back in."
— R. Sharma, Delhi

"I gave my son a paper boat instead of a speech about resilience. He understood immediately. I didn't need to explain what water does to paper. He already knew."
— Name withheld, Bangalore

"Three years after the diagnosis I bought the Red Blood Cell. I put it on his bedside table. He asked what it was. I said: it's the part of you that never stopped trying. He's been in remission fourteen months."
— A. Verma, Chennai

The Cuff: Now In Its Twelfth Consecutive Year Of Being Tight
The handcuff (D.O.M.O-036, ₹111) was produced to commemorate the gap between what people earn and what their life costs. That gap, our data team confirms, widened again this week. The cuff is the same size it was last year. The wrist has not grown. The constraint is structural.
■ Wednesday Morning
Nothing New About Wednesday. Everything New Inside It.
A Wednesday is a middle. Not the beginning of something and not yet the end. It is the day the week forgets to explain itself. Blood cancer diagnoses happen on Wednesdays. So do remissions. So do ordinary breakfasts that are the last ordinary breakfast for a while. Wednesday does not announce these things. They simply occur, in the middle, as most important things do.
■ From The Lab
Object Thirty-Nine.
Not Ready.
"Getting There."
Sources within the DOMO research division confirm that Object No. 039 is in development. They will not confirm what it is. They have confirmed only that it is "the kind of thing that's been sitting in the room so long everyone stopped seeing it." We consider this an adequate description of most objects worth making.

Ten Pins. One Ball. A Society That Calls This Entertainment.

Cultural Correspondent • Unaffiliated

A bowling alley is the only venue in modern culture where the explicit goal is to knock everything down simultaneously — and this is considered a success. A perfect game is a game where nothing survives. Where every pin, identical to every other pin, is eliminated completely.

The crowd applauds. The machine resets. The pins return in exactly the same formation. Ready to fall again.

DOMO's Bowling Pin (D.O.M.O-038, ₹188) was not designed to accuse bowling. It was designed to ask what happens when a whole generation is arranged in formation and told to wait for impact. The formation is the problem. Not the ball. Not the lane. The decision to make ten identical things and stand them in a triangle.

"The ball doesn't need to be smart. It just needs to find the formation."

— D.O.M.O-038, Warning Label

Our correspondent visited a bowling alley on Tuesday to observe the formation in person. Ten pins. Identical. Arranged with mathematical precision into a pattern designed to be destroyed. By the fifth frame our correspondent had stopped watching the ball and started watching the pins.

They stand very still. They have no choice. They were not given one.

200 Billion New Red Blood Cells Were Made While You Read This Headline.

Science Desk

The human body manufactures approximately two million red blood cells every second. By the time you finish reading this sentence, your bone marrow will have produced enough new cells to fill a small syringe. It will not tell you this. It does not require acknowledgement. It simply continues.

Blood cancer is the interruption of this continuity. It arrives not from outside but from inside — a mutation in the very factory that makes the cells. The marrow, which has been working faithfully since before birth, begins to produce cells that are wrong. Too many. Too fast. Too broken to carry oxygen. The loyal soldier is replaced by a mob that serves nothing.

DOMO cannot cure this. We have made an object (D.O.M.O-037, ₹206) and directed all proceeds toward research. We are aware this is a small contribution. We are making it anyway. The alternative is to make nothing, and making nothing has never helped anyone.

corrupted 2,000,000 cells / second. Until the factory breaks.

■ Corrections

Vol. XXXVII stated that DOMO "does not have an answer." This was accurate at the time of printing. It remains accurate. DOMO has objects, not answers. The objects point toward questions. The questions, if enough people ask them, become something. We are still waiting to see what.

FoundFound: one outlier. Standing slightly apart from the formation. Refusing to be symmetrical. If you are looking for this outlier — it is on our website. It has a model number. It has a price. It is still standing.
AnnouncementDOMO Times Vol. XXXVIII, Wednesday Edition, now available. Tomorrow we may publish Vol. XXXIX. We will if tomorrow seems to deserve a paper. So far every day has. Some more than others. Today qualifies.
LostLost: one key to one set of economic constraints. Last seen in the possession of a capital-holding class that does not list it on any public registry. Reward: cannot match what the key is worth. Nothing can.
Notice — Blood CancerIf you know someone. If you are someone. If the word has entered your house and you don't know what to hold while you're frightened — there is an object. ₹206. It carries nothing but a declaration that the fight is seen. That is sometimes enough to keep going.
